History of the DACAS

Data Collection, Analysis and sensitization(DACAS)is registered non-governmental community based organization based in Arusha, Tanzania. It was registered with certificate No. 41975.

The focus of DACAS philosophy and activities is on enhencing the availability of reliable data or information through exploration, Learning and experiencing.This information or data can be used for various purposes including policy making, project design and any other purposes depending on the objective of the activity.

The way our activities are conducted and coordinated is purely participatory by staying, sharing and experiencing the realities of lives, natural and cultural heritages in the rural villages of Tanzania.

In most cases DACAS works as an agency for various activities including training on data collection,designing data collection tools,conducting surveys,analysing data, production of draft report for surveys,designing, organizing and coordinating all kind of exploratory surveys.

DACAS is the only organization in Tanzania mandated to partner or organize and coordinate surveys activities in form of exploration with organizations from any part of the world,Institutions or individuals depending on the topics of their interest.

DACAS begun its activies back in 1998 so it has todate covered about 75% of Tanzanian rural community and hence become the only single NGO in Tanzania with such experience . It has conducted different kind of surveys and data analysis in 15 out of 20 regions of Tanzania.
Recently DACAS has launched a program known as Exploratory Learning by Experiencing(ELEP) with aim of attracting people from all over the world interested in doing surveys with Tanzanian community in their local villages.

During this period the participants will get an opportunity to learn alot by staying with local people, learn their cultures, exploring their natural heritages etc.

To start with this program will be conducted in the Northern regions of Arusha and Kilimanjaro where there are a lot of cultural and natural heritages including highest mountain in Africa,largest wildlife reserves in Africa e.g Ngorongoro, Manyara, Tarangire and Serengeti. Also to learn a diverse culture of pastoralists such as Maasai, Barabaigs and fruits nad roots collectors Hazabes.
This is not a tourism by kind of exploratory or study tours by which participants will not be regarded as tourists but as survey partiners.

Major objectives of DACAS:

(a) To promote positive behavioral changes through exploratory study and study tours in order to create developmental awareness for rural communities of Tanzania through participatory sharing of their ideas and views.

(b)To conduct toilor made and low cost surveys or researches for other organizations or individuals on contract basis.

(c) To liaise or partner with any organization wishing to conduct surveys but with no time or access to the local communities.

(d) To promote effective participatory methodology of data gathering that may lead to formulation of effective and implementable pocicies for improvement of the community' livelihood.

(e) To promote availability of timely reliable and valid data through designing of appropriate procedures and tools for data collection and analysis.

(f) To provide timely consultancy services on survey or research design, excution of the survey, data collection, analysis and report writing.

(g) Capacity building of the local communities for managing their own development projects.

(h)Identification of the poor communities or individuals who qualifies for development projects
